Gore Mountain circa 1986

I recently unearthed these photos that I took at Gore in the mid-1980s, an era before snowboards, helmets and mammoth snowmaking operations. If you skied at Gore then, you will certainly remember the Old Red Gondola, featured in many of the images here. The pictures were all taken with a Pentax 35mm SLR using 100-speed print film. I scanned the prints to create the digital images. The photo above and the two below are from March, 1986.

Jeff's Highlights: 2010-2011 Ski Season

It’s been such a great ski season that I’m reluctant to call it “over.” You don’t have to be a skier to know that the winter of 2010-11 was longer, colder and snowier than recent winters. Although the ski season got off to a slow start, skiers were rewarded for their patience with a streak of snow and consistent cold that started in early January and ran well into spring. And once spring finally did arrive, you might argue that the skiing got even better.

Skiing on Easter?

In my last few reports from Gore Mountain, I've mentioned the striking contrast in the snowpack between last year and this year. Following are a few sets of comparative photos to illustrate that difference.

Last year, April 2, 2010, same location

Matt from Ski = MC Squared on Lies

As if last weekend's blockbuster spring skiing wasn't enough, skiers were rewarded with another weekend of near-perfect spring conditions. On second thought, drop the word "near."

Gore Mountain: 04/03/2011

Spring conditions have been elusive this year, but this weekend finally delivered the goods in spades at Gore Mountain. After a great ski day with the family Saturday, I got clearance for a solo return visit on Sunday.

Gore Mountain: 04/02/2011

The big April Fool's Day snowstorm turned out to be a joke, just a couple inches to frost the trees at Gore, but that was fine because what we all really wanted was a weekend of spring skiing. And that's exactly what we got.
