Adirondack ski areas by the numbers: Trails and Lifts

Skiers on Mountain Run at Whiteface last winter. The side-by-side chairlifts are the Mountain Run double chair and Little Whiteface double chair.

The Saratoga Skier and Hiker, first-hand accounts of adventures in the Adirondacks and beyond, and Gore Mountain ski blog.
It’s the end of January and we’re roughly at the mid-point of the ski season. Since there’s an ugly (but blessedly brief) thaw underway I won’t be skiing at West Mountain tonight (missed last week too – bad string of luck lately). Here’s another By the Numbers installment instead.

The "% Currently Open" statistic in the table below is an interesting one. The fact that no one’s at 100% reflects a low-snow January, the multi-day thaw we suffered through earlier in the month, and some mid-week terrain closures (particularly Gore). But the % open statistic is also just a snapshot – most skiers, myself included, are of the opinion that the 2012-13 ski season has so far been much better than last year.

Trails and lifts fine print:
  • All statistics were gathered from each ski area's website.
  • Acres represents total skiable acres.
  • % Open was calculated as the percentage of trails reported open on each ski area's daily conditions report for Monday, 01/28/2013.
  • For Killington, % Open was calculated as the percentage of acres reported open on Killington's daily conditions report.
  • For Gore and Whiteface, % Open was reported by each ski area on their daily conditions report. It's unknown whether that represents % of trails or % of acreage.
  • % Open may reflect mid-week terrain closures at some ski areas, for example Gore.
  • Killington and Hunter included for comparison purposes, as with other "By the Numbers" posts.

  1. This week's rain now has me changing my mind on this: "the 2012-13 ski season has so far been much better than last year."
