Gore Mountain: 03/13/2010

Gray but dry, good coverage, frozen surfaces

Most families would have stayed home today, but we've gone up to Gore every weekend this winter. Today was forecast to be dry with temperatures in the low 40s, but driving up through showers this morning had us second-guessing our plans. It did dry out by the time we reached Gore, and stayed that way all day.

The snow never softened up, and patrol kept most of the entire upper mountain roped all day. We skied the various front runs off the gondola for a few hours, and called it a day by 2pm or so. Although there was good coverage on the trails and in the woods, surfaces were frozen granular that never softened into corn. It still felt good to get out and make some turns.

Can't stay out of the trees

Word is that Gore is shooting to stay open through April 11. Right now, coverage looks pretty good. Obviously the weather over the next 3-4 weeks will determine whether we make it to April 11.

Based on what we saw at the mountain today, it does not appear that this weekend's weather event will do much damage to the base. As we were leaving the mountain spotty snow was falling, and there's a weather advisory out tonight for accumulating snow above 1500 feet in elevation.
