Rollins Pond: 07/15/2017

We’ve made it something of an annual tradition to head up to Rollins Pond for a weekend of camping and paddling, using the state campground at Rollins as our base. You can’t beat the campsites – nearly every one has direct waterfront – or the access to excellent flatwater paddling.

Canoe camping, Follensby Clear Pond: 06/26/2016

At 12 and 8, our kids are the perfect age for camping. After some island camping at Lake George last weekend, we headed north to one of my favorite parts of the Adirondacks for some canoe camping this weekend.

Paddling the Floodwood - Rollins loop: 08/01/2015

Before I was a hiker or a skier or a climber, I was a paddler. Granted, the term “paddler” may be overselling things a bit, but nonetheless my first introduction to the Adirondacks came as a kid at Scout camp, where paddling the lakes and ponds near Upper Saranac Lake on mulit-day canoe trips was an integral part of the program. I paddled those waters for 5 years as a camper, 5 more years on the camp staff, and have returned many times as an adult. In a way, those waters represent my Adirondack roots.

Floodwood Mountain: 08/03/2014

If you’ve spent much time in the Adirondacks, certain places have special meaning. My short list includes Lake George, Mount Marcy, Gore and Whiteface. But ground zero for me is an obscure mountain in the northern Adirondacks named Floodwood.
