DEC to reopen some High Peaks trails

Phil Brown is reporting in his Adirondack Outtakes blog this evening that DEC will reopen many of the trails closed following Hurricane Irene tomorrow. Important highlights include:
  • All trails from the Adirondack Loj trailhead, Garden trailhead, and Cascade Mountain Trailhead, among others, will reopen.
  • All trails accessed from the Adirondack Mountain Reserve trailhead remain closed.
  • All trails in the Dix Mountain Wilderness area and the Elk Lake trailhead remain closed.
  • The Roaring Brook and Ridge trails in the Giant Mountain Wilderness area remain closed due to the continued closure of a section of Route 73.
Note that the above list is not comprehensive, please refer to the DEC advisory published in Phil's blog and linked above for specific openings and closures. The DEC's High Peaks Trail Information web page will also be updated as trails are reopened.

In addition, the Adirondack Mountain Club will reopen its Adirondack Loj and Johns Brook Lodge on Thursday.

Both the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Adirondack 46ers have started planning work days to repair damaged trails this fall. Information on the first of these work days can be found here and here, with additional efforts sure to be announced in the coming days and weeks.

For hikers planning to return to the High Peaks this weekend and beyond, please monitor DEC's trail openings and closings carefully. Thanks go out to Phil Brown for his continued excellent coverage of Irene's aftermath.

  1. IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Hikers will not be able to drive to the Garden this weekend after all. The bridge on the road to the Garden Trailhead will be closed to motor vehicles this weekend (9/9-11). Pedestrians can cross the bridge. The Town of Keene will be operating a shuttle bus from the Marcy Field parking area to the corner of Market Street and Adirondack Road (approximately 1.25 miles away from the Garden Trailhead) from 12 pm to 7 pm on Friday and from 7 am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
